Urban Farmer Debbie Hillman, from The Talking Farm in Evanston, will be at the Glencoe Historical Society’s Eklund Garden April 26, to discuss urban gardening and edible landscaping. She will offer tips and discuss making your garden more “green” this year.

The free event is scheduled to coincide with the time when Glencoe residents are making plans for their lawns and gardens. With today’s emphasis on “Going Green,” Hillman will explain where our food comes from, how to support a sustainable garden and how to improve the health of the environment while growing your own landscaping. Ideas for edible plants that will augment and enhance existing gardens are also on tap.

An historical society member will fill in the background of how early Taylorsport and Glencoe residents raised or shot their own food before the advent of shops in downtown Glencoe. But the focus of the afternoon will be on turning Glencoe gardens into green gardens—not only in color but environmentally as well.

The Talking Farm is a nonprofit organization seeking to establish an environmental learning center that grows organic produce for local distribution, teaches agriculture, food production and through a working model fosters conversations about how we can create a healthier and sustainable food system. The Glencoe Historical Society, organized in 1937, works to preserve artifacts and archives dealing with Glencoe’s past.

Talk to the Farmer will be held in the Eklund Garden, 377 Park Ave. (in case of rain indoors at the Eklund History Center, 377 Park Ave.) at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 26. Refreshments will be served. Admission is free and gardeners both experienced and amateur are welcome to come by for both the talk and to bring questions to Hillman.
