What’s New at the Eklund History Center (Jan 8, 2009)

The temperature, snow and wind this January proves once more that Chicago has a history of cold and bitter weather. Don’t sulk about it! Come out and enjoy the Glencoe Historical Society’s newest exhibit, Baby, It’s Cold Outside.

A display of women’s outerwear from the 1940s through the 1960s, Baby features fur coats, fur hats and wool ensembles worn to beat the cold—as well as look beautiful. Prior to the 1970s, when pants came into fashion, women bundled up with heavy coats, boots, gloves and scarves. Many examples are on view from the lamb broadtail fur “New Look” coat—with pinched waist and full skirt—of the post-war 1940s to the mock-Chesterfield—with fur collar and cuffs replacing velvet—on a 1960s straight line coat.

Most of the ensembles come from the collection of Helen Sharpe, a donation from 2006 of the clothing of a long-time Glencoe resident, but none has been on display before. Other furs come from the Marianne Crosby Collection, a mid-2008 donation made by the estate of the Glencoe Historical Society emeritus board member.

The official opening for the exhibit is Sunday afternoon, January 25th, 2–4 p.m. at the Eklund History Center, 377 Park Ave. To make sure the afternoon will be sunny and warm, refreshments including hot cocoa will be served. For more information call the Eklund Center, 847.835.0040.
