Prom-enade of Dresses from 1900s to 2000s Featured at Eklund History Center (Jul 9, 2008)

Close to 100 guests, decked out in 1950s prom attire, danced the night away at the Glencoe Historical Society’s annual garden party the Second Chance Prom, A Starry Starry Night July 12 in the society’s Eklund Garden.

Arrayed in frilly dresses with stiff crinolines under them, the women wore traditional corsages, while men in tuxedoes (and one or two who came in the style of Danny Zuko from the musical Grease in tee-shirts with rolled up sleeves) escorted them to the dance floor behind the Eklund History Center museum. Inside the museum was Chance To Dance, the newest exhibit, highlighting dance dresses from the 1900s through the century.

Dinner, prepared by the society’s “in-house chef”, board member John Carothers, featured all foods on a stick, ranging from jerk chicken with salsa, lamb with tsaziki sauce and pork with ginger accompanied by three types of olives, mushrooms, crudities and fruit. Desert was brownies with raspberry puree for dipping.

Glencoe residents Debbie and David Crowell were crowned King and Queen of the Prom and everyone enjoyed dancing to the tunes of 1960s-1980s music. Over $10,000 was raised for the operations of the historical society, which maintains the archives and artifact collection at the history center as well as the museum.
