Eklund History Center Open on Sundays, Wednesdays (Jun 19, 2008)

Prom might have meant sweaty palms, stretch limos and fears about getting a date when you were a teenager, but at the Glencoe Historical Society’s Second Chance Prom: A Starry Starry Night, adults can dance the night away without worries in the beautiful Eklund Garden.

The society’s annual garden party fundraiser will be held Saturday, July 12. Cocktails start at 6:30 p.m. followed by dinner and dancing at 7:30 p.m. The Eklund Garden will be transformed into a 1950s Prom setting, complete with streamers and lights, corsages and boutonnieres.

On this evening, The Eklund History Center museum will also debut its newest exhibit Chance to Dance, a history of proms featuring period dance attire. Dresses from the 1920s forward will be displayed from the society’s textile collection. While proms were first identified as a separate event from a ball in the 1880s, it wasn’t until the 1950s that the extravaganzas that we know today came into their own.

Classic prom attire is suggested and bouttonieres and corsages are available for purchase. A Prom Queen and King will be crowned and picture opportunities will be available.

A Starry Starry Night is the major fundraiser for the Glencoe Historical Society. Funds are used to maintain the Eklund Garden and History Center, which provides programming and collects and maintains the permanent archives of the history of the Village as well as research opportunities for information about Glencoe.

Cost for the event is much less than the estimated $1,200 graduating teens pay for proms today. Dancing, dinner, pictures and fun are available for $75 per person. Mail checks for the event to the Glencoe Historical Society, P.O. Box 457, Glencoe. For additional information and question, call president Evey Schweig at 847.835.1706 or leave a message at the historical society, 847.835.0040.
