Almost from the beginning, Glencoe differed from some of its neighbors in its willingness to include different ethnic and racial groups within its boundaries. Because of this, Glencoe’s early African-American population was an almost unique community on the North Shore.

The Glencoe Historical Society has developed an exhibition that will be shown at the Hammond Room of the Glencoe Public Library, 320 Park Ave., for the month of February, Black History Month. The exhibit highlights how Glencoe’s black community began in the late 1880s and developed, including the history of the first African-Americans in the schools, black elected public officials, and the story of Glencoe’s beaches. The exhibition also includes information about early African-American history in other communities along the North Shore

Two events to celebrate Black History Month are scheduled: an opening reception and a panel discussion mid-month. The opening reception is scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 3, from 1 to 4 p.m. Historical Society board members will be present for questions and comments.

On Tuesday, Feb. 19th from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. a special panel discussion will feature some of Glencoe’s African-American residents discussing the advantages and challenges of living on the North Shore. Dino Robinson, editor of Shorefront magazine will be the moderator.

Join the Historical Society for these two special Black History Month events. Refreshments will be served at both events.

All events are being held at the Glencoe Public Library due to construction at the Eklund History Center. For more information call the Glencoe Historical Society at 847.835.0040.
