Evey Schweig, a long-time board member of the Glencoe Historical Society, was elected president at the society’s annual meeting Nov. 9. Susan B. Borre was elected secretary.

The society’s annual meeting celebrated the group’s 70th anniversary with foods from the previous seven decades—ranging from sardines on a saltine from the 1930s to the 1950 “pupu platter” made famous by Trader Vic’s restaurant in the Palmer House in Chicago and 2000’s sushi array. Catered by board member John Carothers, the dinner featured Swedish meatballs, salmon mouse, devilled eggs and fondue, all favorite foods from different eras.

Schweig, with her committee members Borre and Karen Etalon, were behind the recently successful Ghosts in the Garden, a Halloween spectacular in the Eklund Garden, 377 Park Ave. The trio also unveiled new items to be sold through the society as a fund raising effort, including mugs, stationery cards with images of Glencoe in the 1950s and sticky notes featuring 60022/Glencoe on them.

Schweig and Borre will serve two-year terms. Also elected at the meeting were four new board members, bringing membership in the group to 23.

The Glencoe Historical Society, located at the Eklund History Center, 377 Park Ave., works to collect, preserve and protect Glencoe’s heritage expressed in artifacts, archives and photographs. It is currently remodeling the second floor of the Eklund Center to ensure better climate control for the entire collection. It is expected to reopen January 1, 2008.
