Strawberry Sociable Celebrates Garden And GHS’ Seventieth Birthday

Spring is always a special time in any garden as plant shoots begin to emerge from the soil and buds swell and burst into leaves on the trees—a sight we all welcome. Spring 2007 has more significance than usual in the Glencoe Historical Society’s Eklund Garden, as this spring marks the conclusion of the Garden Renovation Project begun in 2003.

The final planting phase of the Renovation Project includes the addition of a Whitespire Birch Grove underplanted with daffodils, eleven new Clethra massed in an open area near a group of Hydrangeas, a large Marma Maple, a Lilac intended to soften the brick wall of the adjoining property, three Pagoda Dogwood in the middle garden and several vines to mask the handicap ramp to the 375 Park Avenue Building. The Glencoe Park District, which has been supportive of the Society since the Garden Project’s inception, provided a much appreciated element to the Garden Renovation Project this past fall by rebuilding the cedar fences which have been a part of the garden for many years.

The Glencoe Historical Society is grateful for the very significant community support granted to the Eklund Garden Renovation Project. The renovation of the Eklund Garden was made possible only because of the large number of contributions received from individual donors; the support of Village and Park District officials and staff; donation of services by firms such as Mariani Landscape, Nels Johnson Tree Experts, Deerfield Electric, and Idlewood Electric Supply; and the support of a great variety of community organizations, including The Glencoe Garden Club, The Village Gardeners, The Midwestern Antiques Club and The Women’s Library Club of Glencoe.

The Eklund Garden has been an integral green space in the heart of Glencoe’s Business District for more than 100 years. The renovation of the Eklund Garden is the fulfillment of Sally Eklund’s wish that her property continue to serve this purpose, while enabling the Glencoe Historical Society to convey to the community the value of our community’s history and heritage in a garden setting of quiet beauty. We hope that you will discover and enjoy the renovated Eklund Garden at your leisure this summer.

The Historical Society’s Board invites you to celebrate the completion of the Garden Project and the 70th Birthday of the Historical Society at the complimentary Strawberry Sociable, a yearly event held at the Society, scheduled this year for Sunday afternoon, June 3 from 2 to 4 P.M. Please come!
