Second Graders to Visit Downtown Glencoe, Historical Society (May 31, 2007)

More than 35 people enjoyed both the weather and the theatrical performance of Othello on Sunday, June 10, 2007, in the Eklund Garden.

The Glencoe Historical Society hosted a Lunch with Othello, with Moroccan-themed foods such as lamb pies and curried chicken, prior to a performance by the Writer’s Theater of Shakespeare’s Othello.

The first-annual event was not bothered by the cicada population, either in numbers or sound, as had been feared. Mica Cole, education director for Writer’s Theater, gave the audience a quick overview of the history of the theater, its outreach education program in both schools and libraries on the North Shore, and the play ahead.

A short exhibit, Theater in Glencoe, illustrated the history of theater in the village, beginning in 1911, with a Woman’s Library Club performance. The Threshold Players, a community theater group, was in residence from 1926 through 1969, while the North Shore Drama Festival had plays presented in the school auditorium in the summer of 1935. Actor Burgess Meredith was featured and lived in a Glencoe family home while here.

The Actors Theatre of Glencoe, an affiliate of the Glencoe Park District, has been in residence since the 1990s, and the Writer’s Theatre is celebrating its 15th anniversary season. For the first decade or so, the Writer’s Theatre presented at the stage behind Books on Vernon. Today, the theater presents there for one production and the other three in its season are presented at the Woman’s Library Club.

Following lunch and conversation, the guests walked to the Library Club for the performance, which by all accounts was deemed a rave.
