Post Cards and Birthday Greetings Open at Eklund History Center (Apr 25, 2007)

The Eklund Garden begins the summer looking colorful and green with irises, peonies and other flowers in bloom. That signals the time for Glencoe Historical Society’s annual Strawberry Sociable, a celebration of summer, to be held June 3rd, 2–4 p.m. at the Eklund History Center, 377 Park Ave.

Everyone is invited for a free afternoon of sun and strawberry shortcake in the garden, indoors in case of rain. Twelve engraved bricks purchased by donors through the 2006–2007 year will be dedicated in the garden’s commemorative path together with a central commemorative lannonstone block with poetic inscription. Following, there will be an unveiling of plaques honoring Eklund Garden donors from the past year along the garden’s paths.

Included this year is a plaque for the Glencoe Park District, honoring the board and staff efforts over the year to aid in the development of the garden. This year staffers helped the Glencoe Historical Society repair and replace the garden’s fences.

The annual Strawberry Sociable continues a tradition the Glencoe Historical Society has enjoyed since the 1950s. The newly resurrected tradition began five years ago, when the society dedicated the first bricks for its heritage pathway through the Eklund Garden to the Eklund History Center.

Admission is free.
