Historical Society Sets Dates for Summer Events (Apr 25, 2007)

Two new exhibits are open at the Glencoe Historical Society’s Eklund History Center: Greetings from Glencoe, a compendium of postcards recently donated to the society, and Happy Birthday, a look at what society has collected since its May 3, 1937 incorporation.

Happy Birthday highlights some of the major collections assembled by the Society since it moved from its first home in two file cabinets on the Glencoe Public Library’s landing to the Eklund History Center, 377 Park Ave. Included are artifacts not only from the Sara C. “Sally” Eklund collection, but also items and photos from other collections:

  • Ethel Hein Collection
    A descendent of the Swedish royal family whose father was a state senator, Hein donated many household artifacts and photos that provide an excellent look at the era of the early twentieth century;
  • Arthur Wienecke Collection
    Owner of the long-standing Wienecke Hardware and village trustee, Wienecke’s collection highlights photos and artifacts from both Glencoe history and his stint in the U.S. Army during World War II;
  • Helena Seaberg Collection
    A local artist and volunteer in the League of Women Voters and other clubs around town, Seaberg was known for her magnificent story telling. She wore her U.S. World War I Navy nurse’s outfit in many Glencoe 4th of July parades and it is now part of the historical society’s textile collection together with art she produced while living here;
  • Helen Sharpe Collection
    More than 200 items in the society’s textile collection are from Sharpe, a woman who volunteered in many organizations, including the Woman’s Library Club, and was married to a village trustee.

Other artifacts on display highlight the society’s collection of maps, books by Glencoe authors and the society’s extensive newspaper collection.
