Greetings from Glencoe Opens April 29th (Apr 18, 2007)

The daffodils are up, the tulips right behind them and the Eklund Garden looks smashing. With spring and summer coming, the Glencoe Historical Society has scheduled a series of events to be held outdoors. Mark your calendars now for:

  • Annual Strawberry Sociable
  • Lunch with Othello
  • Second Annual Garden Party

June 3 is the date for the Society’s annual Strawberry Sociable. Members, donors and the public are invited for an afternoon of sun and strawberry shortcake at the garden, 377 Park Ave. We will meet indoors in case of rain. Bricks purchased by donors through the 2006 year will be dedicated in the garden’s commemorative path, followed by the unveiling of plaques honoring Eklund Garden donors. The Strawberry Sociable is a historical society tradition dating back to at least the 1950s. Admission is free.

On June 10 Lunch with Othello is set for a joint Historical Society - Writer’s Theater lunch-theater afternoon. At noon in the Eklund Garden a Moroccan-styled lunch will be served followed by a matinee at Writer’s Theater to see Othello. Tickets are $65 for the event, which includes a specially priced ticket plus lunch. Those who hold subscription tickets already can exchange them for June 10. Call the historical society at 847.835.0040 to make reservations.

The Second Annual Garden Party will be held July 21 also in the beautiful Eklund Garden. Come wearing your favorite garden party attire—including hat—and enjoy food, music and conversation. Indoors, the Eklund History Center will be featuring a new exhibit, Life’s a Beach so Dive Right In! The exhibit will feature many pictures of the Glencoe Beach through the years together with a “fashion show” of beach outfits from the turn of the last century.

The Glencoe Historical Society at the Eklund History Center is open from 10 a.m. through 4 p.m. Wednesday, from 2 to 4 p.m. on the second and fourth Sundays of the month through June and by appointment. Call 847.835.0040 for reservations for any of these events.
