Glencoe School Days, the evolving Business District in Glencoe and Mrs. Sharpe Steps Out are three exhibits now on view at the Glencoe Historical Society’s Eklund History Center (museum) and Garden, 377 Park Ave., Glencoe.
Glencoe School Days features the history of the eight schools in Glencoe’s past, starting with the one-room schoolhouse that later became a home for a family burned out of theirs and ending with the construction of West School, now used for grades 3 and 4. Desks from various eras and pictures of graduating classes are all on view.
The business district exhibit looks at the former Wienecke’s Hardware and Toy Store, which graced the downtown for almost 100 years, and the Eklund Furniture Making and Interior Design workshop, the location of the current museum.
Mrs. Sharpe Steps Out features summer clothing from the Helen Sharpe Collection, a group of 500 dresses and accessories donated to the historical society when Helen Sharpe died last spring. Purses, shoes, hats and dresses on display are all ensembles that probably could be worn today although they date from the 1950s through the 1970s.
The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesdays and 2–4 p.m. the second and fourth Sundays of the month. The garden is open from dawn to dusk. Admission to both is free. For further information, call 847.835.0040
