New Lighting for Eklund Garden (Jul 18, 2006)

The Glencoe Historical Society’s Garden Party, expected to be the first of many, went off without a hitch Saturday, July 29th, despite the high temperatures. The Eklund Garden, 377 Park Ave., was filled with more than 125 people who enjoyed a buffet supper and piano music throughout the evening and just a hint of breezes off the lake.

The supper, catered by historical society board member John Carothers, featured four tables heaped with food, each with a different theme. From the fish table, with fresh salmon and crab empanadas, to the meat tables with ham, lamb en brochette and chicken satay, people partook of the varied menus at tables placed around the garden. Historical society board member Vivian Zahniser made the desserts, which included small pecan pies, fruit tarts and crème de menthe brownies.

Highlights of the evening included the spectacular blooms in the Eklund Garden, which has been transformed from a simple home side yard to a fully realized planned garden, and the Mrs. Sharpe Steps Out exhibit, a selection of dresses suitable for a garden party taken from the Helen L. Sharpe Collection of dresses and accessories the Sharpe estate donated to the historical society last spring. The garden plan is courtesy of Mariani Landscaping and John Mariani and his wife were present to enjoy the evening.

The Garden Party, which the society hopes to make an annual affair, is a fundraiser for the historical society, which uses the funds to maintain the Eklund History Center museum and the garden.

The historical society museum has three other exhibits also on display:

  • Taylorsport and Old Glencoe, a history of the village from 1836-1900;
  • Glencoe School Days, about the development of Glencoe schools and the changes in curriculum; and the
  • Eklund Furniture Workshop.

The Glencoe Historical Society’s Eklund Center is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesdays during the summer and the second and fourth Sundays of the month, 2-4 p.m. from September through June. Call for questions or an appointment: 847.835.0040. The Eklund Garden is open from dawn to dusk for everyone to enjoy.

    Hi, I'm writing the "scene" sections of Hinsdale and Winnetka magazines for the fall issue, and wondered if you would have any pictures of your recent Garden Party that could be included with a short story. "Scenes" is part of our magazine that deals with local charitable gatherings with an art, architectural, garden flair, as the Garden Party demonstrates. Please let me know if you are able to send these along. My number is 847-604-9590 x111. Thank you, I look forward to hearing from you.
