The Glencoe Historical Society’s Eklund History Center, 377 Park Ave., will be open for summer hours, until September 2006. Both the Research Center and museum will be open on Wednesdays between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., while the museum will also be open on Thursday mornings, from 9 a.m. to Noon.
Visitors to the museum will be able to view exhibits on Glencoe School Days, about the development of the school system, the building of schools and school practices—remember when children walked home for lunch every day?—Taylorsport and Old Glencoe and the Eklund Upholstery Shop workshop.
The Research Center is available for work on house history, family history or to answer any other questions.
The historical society is holding its first benefit event, a Garden Party, July 29th from 6–9 p.m. in the Eklund Garden, the beautifully landscaping oasis in downtown Glencoe. Enjoy visiting with your neighbors, a scrumptious buffet dinner and the beauty of the garden, now in its fourth year of restoration and rebirth. In the Eklund History Center the newest exhibit, Mrs. Sharpe Steps Out, will be unveiled, featuring seven dresses from the Sharpe Fashion Collection, donated to the historical society by the estate of Helen Sharpe. Attendees to the party are encouraged to dress in their finest Garden Party attire.
Tickets for the Garden Party are $50 per person until July 10; $65 after. Mail reservations and checks to the Glencoe Historical Society, 377 Park Avenue or call 847.835.0040 and leave a message.
