Residents recall Glencoe School Days at Eklund Center exhibit opening (Mar 23, 2006)

In 1995, when Ruth Lucchesi’s mother passed away, Mrs. Lucchesi found an old family Bible—one old enough to have won a prize for the oldest Bible in Henry County in western Illinois. It belonged to her great-grandfather but Mrs. Lucchesi was uncertain if it was her mother’s father or her father’s. That uncertainty—and curiosity—propelled Mrs. Lucchesi on the road to genealogy explorations that wound up with her publishing a book in 2000, a 400-page hardcover with 908 people identified.

Ruth Lucchesi will be the guest of the Glencoe Historical Society at 7:30 p.m. Thursday April 27th to discuss how to get started in doing genealogy, what resources are available and what you can find “in your own backyard.” The meeting is free and open to the public.

Lucchesi’s work on genealogy accelerated since she retired in 1998 from her post at the University of Chicago. She has been working on the histories of both her parents’s lines and is close to publishing a second book, following the life of her mother’s family, picking up a genealogy that goes back to the 1600’s, a compendium of 3,000 names.

Today, genealogy is easier to do using the Internet and computer programs, Lucchesi says. But another key element is finding family with whom you can cooperate. She will answer questions about resources and make suggestions for where to find specific information based on dates, ethnic heritage and other factors.

Genealogists and potential genealogists will be able to search the files at the Research Center at the Eklund History Center for names, addresses and histories of families who have been in Glencoe for decades. However, anyone is invited to join the general discussion, whether researching a Glencoe family or not.

The genealogy meeting will be held at 7:30, Thursday, April 27th at the Eklund History Center, 377 Park Ave. Admission is free, but reservations are needed. Call 847.835.0040 and leave a message on the historical society phone, or call on Wednesdays to talk to a Research Center worker. Refreshments will be served.

The genealogy program is the first in a series of monthly events at the Eklund Center. Watch for dates for the May event, a book signing for a local Glencoe author, and mark your calendar for June 11th for the annual Strawberry Sociable.
