Rae Fritz and Mary Beth Fellinger, members of The Village Gardeners, tend the hosta at the base of the newly installed Frontier Chinese Elm.
A 3.5-inch caliper Frontier Chinese Elm was installed this week in the Glencoe Historical Society’s Eklund Garden. Mariani Landscape donated the tree, which completes Phase II of the Garden Renovation Project installed by the firm this summer. The new tree replaces a diseased American Elm which was removed three years ago.
Beinlich’s Tree Care is donating a portion of their cost to remove a dead apple tree and grind out two stumps on the Historical Society’s property at 377 Park Avenue. The Beinlich family name is very much intertwined with the history of Glencoe.
The Village Gardeners, a local garden club, continues their weekly volunteer work at the Eklund Garden. The group has scheduled a fall cleanup day for their members in early October.
A bronze garden plaque memorializing longtime Glencoe resident Bobbie Hazelkorn will be placed in the Eklund Garden at a future date to announced. The plaque is made possible by the generous contributions of her husband Herbert Hazelkorn and her daughters Marcy Beck, Denise Skyler, and Teri Rosenberg.
The brick patio outside the Museum is now graced by a teak picnic table and benches, and a teak chair sits in the garden near the meandering gravel path. These seating areas, which are intended to encourage Glencoe residents to visit the Eklund Garden, are the gift of Kathy and Nick Knorr. Anyone wishing to learn more about the Historical Society's garden should contact Vivian Zahniser, Garden Chair, at 847.835.0040.
