Kovnat Donates Wren Houses to Eklund Garden (Aug 25, 2005)

What do you remember about grade school – about elementary schools in Glencoe? Do you or your children have pictures stuck away in the attic of Graduation Day, the Halloween parade at South School, the 6th grade Greek Play or other fondly remembered events? How about report cards—are any still around? Or gym uniforms, textbooks or special book bags?

School has reopened and the Glencoe Historical Society is busy working on a School Days exhibit. Because of renovation at the Eklund History Center, the exhibit will not open until October 23rd. Until that time, the historical society is seeking artifacts to include in the exhibit. Artifacts are objects—paper, maps, books, desks, graduation dresses—or anything that reminds people of school, teachers, administrators, the buildings, or special events. We already have a copy of Whoopee News when school children issued a newspaper. Do you have your yearbook or 8th grade autograph book to compliment that? Or, we have desks from various eras—does someone have pens to go with the inkwell desks?

Donations or loans can be delivered to the Eklund Center on the second and fourth Sundays of the months from 2-4 p.m., beginning Sept. 11. Or call 847.835.0040 and ask for a pick up. Remember your school days with the Glencoe Historical Society beginning Oct. 23rd. Until then, clean out you attic so your remembrances can join others’.
