Uncertain what to get special friends? How about stocking stuffers for children who like to color and are interested in their home town? The Glencoe Historical Society will open Saturday morning December 17, 2005, from 10 a.m.–noon for anyone interested in purchasing books for holiday gift-giving. The society’s collection of books meets the needs of every gift-giver or receiver who has loves the village or wants to know more about the town in which they live.
Available for sale will be:
- Images of America: Glencoe, Illinois
- The society’s Arcadia picture-history.
- What’s So Great About Glencoe?
- Award-winning coloring and activity book for children 3rd grade through adults on the history and architecture of the Village.
- Glencoe, Queen of Suburbs: History and Memoirs
- General history book with personal reminiscences from each of the decades between 1920s to the 1970s. Published in conjunction with the Village’s 125th anniversary.
- Glencoe, Queen of Suburbs: Three Tours of its Architectural and Historical Heritage
- Small enough to tuck in a pocket as you travel around the Village, the three bike hikes take in north and central Glencoe, with a convenient map. Homes and sites are marked and explained clearly.
- A Link to the City and the Past: Glencoe’s Chicago and NorthWestern Railroad Station, 1891-1991
- Written for a National Register nomination, the booklet includes a history of the 1891 station, from its inception following petition by residents to replace their existing “shack” to its construction and rehabilitation. Particular attention is paid to its architectural style and architect Charles Frost.
Prices vary. The public is welcome to come and browse, talk about the village’s history and visit the newly renovated museum.
Following six months of extensive renovation, the Historical Society also will be reopening its Research Center on Wednesday mornings beginning in 2006 and for inquiries by phone now. On Wednesday Jan. 5, 2006, the society will add a full open day to its open hours. During the past six months, floors were redone, painting was completed on both levels and ultra-violet filters were installed in the windows to protect the collection. Although not all the exhibits will have completed, the public is welcome to come see the changes on Wednesday, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.; or the second and fourth Sundays from 2-4 p.m. A formal opening for the new exhibits is set for February.
