1,200 spring bulbs were recently installed in the Eklund Garden by Mariani Landscape. The entire area which comprises the bulb garden was excavated before planting, unearthing large chunks of concrete, bricks and coiled wire. A large number of paver bricks from the early days of Park Avenue were scattered about the Eklund property when the road was improved and asphalt was put down. Construction debris that accumulated over decades added to the mix which needed to be removed to enable the successive phases of the Eklund Garden renewal project to proceed. Good use has been made of the old bricks as they now comprise the lovely memorial brick path, donor circle and patio. Friends of the Glencoe Historical Society may yet memorialize family and friends by purchasing an engraved brick at the cost of $100.

Two staked bronze plaques are joining those already in the Eklund Garden. The first honors Barbara Markus Hazelkorn. “Bobby” was a long-time Glencoe resident, spending her childhood and much of her adult life in the same family home. Because of her great love of gardening, her late husband Herb Hazelkorn and her daughters Teri Rosenberg, Denise Skyler, and Marcy Beck kindly chose to remember Bobby by funding a perennial garden in her name.

The second bronze plaque was created by the Board of the Glencoe Historical Society in appreciation of award winning landscape architect John Mariani of Mariani Landscape, Inc.John created and donated a Garden Design Plan for the Eklund Garden, which is being implemented in stages as money becomes available. Additionally, John and his firm have been and continue to be significant benefactors to the Eklund Garden Renovation Project. John Mariani at first sight fell in love with the Eklund Property, realizing its significant potential value to the Village of Glencoe.

Garden Chairperson Vivian Zahniser states, “It was John who provided us with the vision, encouragement, and confidence to tackle a project which otherwise seemed completely overwhelming!”
