Spring was announced at the Eklund Garden by the bloom of the new American Redbud tree that was installed last August as part of Phase I of the Eklund Garden Renovation. May also brought forth a stunning display of bright pink blossoms on the twenty-two new “Karen” azaleas that ring the donors circle just inside the old garden gate. The old planting of bleeding heart put forth a splendid display that was accompanied by the pale yellow blooms of daffodils just south of the garden gate.

Virginia blue bells have been a part of the Eklund Garden for many years. They continue to multiply and their bright blue color is welcomed each spring. Some are nestled near the brick wall that displays the new Eklund plaque. This new bronze plaque tells a brief history of the property and the family who resided here for two generations.

This year the earliest container plantings were done in the urns flanking the Museum doorway in April. Forsythia and blue pansies provided the earliest color in the cool weather. Shortly after the urns were planted, the herb garden begin to show promise as perennials began to poke through the soil and show new green leaves. These perennial plants were augmented with annual herbs and flowers from the Glencoe Park District greenhouse which were planted with assistance from the Village Gardeners Garden Club.

Sara “Sally” Eklund’s life was commemorated May 21, 2005 by family and friends in her garden. A plaque was placed beside a new oak tree donated by her nephew Karl W. Eklund and his family. The oak honors Karl W.’s aunt, Sara C. Eklund, and his father, Karl H. Eklund.
