Spring Blooms at the Eklund Garden (May 23, 2005)

June means the end of the school year and the change to outdoor activities. To celebrate the weather, the glorious Eklund Garden at 377 Park Avenue and summer in general, the Glencoe Historical Society will hold its annual Strawberry Sociable on Jun 12th, 2–4 p.m.

In researching the past of the historical society, we discovered that in the 1940s, the group sponsored a strawberry sociable. While today we have little idea of exactly what went on at those parties, the Historical Society has begun a tradition of its own, dubbed Strawberry Sociable. For the third year, we will begin the afternoon with a dedication of bricks into our Commemorative Walkway, from Park Avenue to the Eklund History Center and museum. This year eight bricks will have been laid, as people continue to purchase commemorative paving stones in honor or memory of those who have served or enjoyed living in Glencoe.

After the ceremony, we will adjourn to the patio for the treats: strawberries, of course, cake and whipped cream for an individual strawberry shortcake.

Residents are invited to this party—fun, history and good weather combined for a wonderful afternoon. The ceremony and strawberries are offered rain or shine. And while you’re at the Eklund Center, be sure to visit the 1940s: Years of Transition exhibit for the last time. It will be replaced over the summer.

During the summer months the Eklund Center is closed but will be available by appointment for research projects or a tour. Call for an appointment for a personal visit, 847-835-0040.
