- Historical Society To Host Annual Strawberry Sociable (May 26, 2005)
The Glencoe Historical Society will hold its annual Strawberry Sociable on Jun 12th, 2–4 p.m., with two short ceremonies honoring Glencoe residents followed by strawberries, shortcake and cream.
The Sociable this year will celebrate the June weather, eight new names that will be inscribed in the commemorative path from Park Avenue to the Eklund History Center, and that portion of the glorious Eklund Garden at 377 Park Ave. that will memorialize Earl Hoover.
The Strawberry Sociable tradition dates from the 1940s, when the Historical Society also celebrated the summer weather. While today we have little idea of exactly what went on at those parties, today’s Historical Society has continued the tradition, and for the third year, we will begin the afternoon with a dedication of bricks into our Commemorative Walkway. This year eight bricks will have been laid, as people continue to purchase commemorative paving stones in honor or memory of those who have served or enjoyed living in Glencoe.
Following that, we will unveil the plaques that honor Glencoe residents in the Eklund Garden. The first such named area will be dedicated to H. Earl Hoover, the man behind the firm of the same name. His family will join in the dedication. The Historical Society also will dedicate the Eklund Family plaque, which has the history of the Swedish family that settled in Glencoe and established its longtime furniture making business in what has now been transformed into the Eklund History Center.
After the ceremonies, we will adjourn to the patio for treats: strawberries, cake and whipped cream for an individual strawberry shortcake for each attendee.
Residents are invited to this party—fun, some history, and dedications combined for a wonderful afternoon. The ceremony and strawberries are offered rain or shine. Inside, at the Eklund Center, the last viewing of 1940s: Years of Transition exhibit will be open. The one-year-long exhibit will be replaced over the summer.
During the summer months the Eklund Center is closed but will be available by appointment for research projects or a tour. Call for an appointment, 847.835.0040.
