Society Has Gifts for Everyone on Your Holiday List (Nov 11, 2004)

Remember when everyone in the family sat down together for dinner and holidays? When the table was set with real dishes, not paper, and some of the families treasures were visible in the hutch, the breakfront or the shelves around the rooms? Remember that slower pace—and your napkin at your plate with a ring around it?

The Glencoe Historical Society is featuring an exhibit, The 1940’s: Years of Transition, that highlights some of those times. A kitchen table is set in the entrance to the society, with a tablecloth, napkins and setting for family dinner. Recall the foods of the era, including canned vegetables brought in from the family Victory Garden. Look at the appliances and tools from the era, as well— food grinder, ricer, aluminum pots and pans and, of course, the wringer-washer. The exhibit features examples of artifacts from the War Years, when Glencoe residents saved paper and metal for the war effort, and the last half of the decade, when they enjoyed music on the radio, Glencoe Garden Club events and dressed up for parties.

In time for the holidays, the Society is offering a series of stocking-stuffer books:

The Eklund Center at 377 Park Ave. is open on the second and fourth Sundays of the month, from 2–4 p.m. Call for appointments, 847.835.0040, or find additional information on the Web site, www.GlencoeHistoricalSociety.org.
