GLENCOE—The oasis that is the Eklund Garden at 377 Park Ave. is changing colors. As temperatures dip at night and warm during the day, the leaves on the deciduous trees are beginning to turn red and yellow, and the mums are flourishing. Fall has arrived and the Glencoe Historical Society invites the community to enjoy the solitude and views in the garden.
The historical society maintains the garden that fronts the historic museum at the Eklund Center, a result of the 2000 donation by Sara “Sally” Eklund. The results of this year’s massive efforts to reclaim the garden from benign neglect can be seen clearly, with the new path that winds around the property, the clean up of the floor and the new plantings, including three 15-foot spruce trees on the west side of the property. A new scarecrow heralds the coming of Halloween.
The public is invited to walk through the garden at any time or just sit on the bench or chairs and enjoy the fall weather. Donations to continue the work in the garden are also welcome. Call Vivian Zahniser, garden chairman, at 847.835.0040 and leave a message or refer to the historical society Web site, www.GlencoeHistoricalSociety.org
