The Glencoe Historical Society has raised $25,000 for the Garden Renovation Project on the Eklund Property. The $25,000 and the significant generosity of Mariani Landscape is enabling the GHS to begin Phase One of the Eklund Garden Renovation Project on Thursday, August 19.
Phase One will include installation of three 15 foot spruce trees and a group of 5 tall bushes along the western edge of the property. Overgrown forsythia bushes will be removed, and some of our lovely hydrangea and other plant materials that are not suitably sited will be transplanted to better locations. Rototilling, soil preparation and soil amendment will be completed in areas to be planted.
A limestone based gravel path will begin just inside the gate and wind through the inner property exiting at the brick patio. Large equipment will be needed to accomplish Phase One, so a section of fence at the rear of the GHS property will be removed temporarily.
The part of the garden nearest the Donors’ Circle will be planted with 22 azaleas. A cornelian cherry tree and other shrubs will screen the 375 Park Avenue Building and its mechanicals.
On behalf of the Society, Garden Chair Vivian Zahniser thanks supporters for assisting the Glencoe Historical Society’s efforts to create a turn-of-the century Garden on the Eklund Property. The Society also encourages supporters to tell friends and neighbors about this project in hopes that they will join in this effort. Phase Two of the Garden Project requires additional funding before it can proceed; it will offer the opportunity for named gardens. The guidelines can be obtained by contacting the Glencoe Historical Society at 847.835.0040.
Vivian and her husband Bob will be on the Eklund Property while all Garden construction work is taking place. If you have questions, please do not hesitate to stop by and talk with one of them.
