GLENCOE—From wooden skis to sleds with runners, from wooden tennis rackets to balloon tire bikes, the Glencoe Historical Society is highlighting Sports of All Sorts that were played with equipment that today would be called out of style. In the years before plastic and lightweight aluminum, wood was the base for lots of sports equipment—and times and scores were lower.
Join us at the Historical Society to view some of this equipment from the past together with a collection of pictures that were donated by Pioneer Press of Glencoe children and adults having a good time through sports in the 1970s and 1980s.
An alcove is set aside specifically for Glencoe Park District (and Park-Recreation District when it had that title) tee shirts and hats, a colorful compendium of programs in sports offered for youths through the years.
Also now on view at the Historical Society, and held over from Black History Month in February, is an exhibit of African-American history in Glencoe. From the founding of the Glencoe African Methodist Episcopal Church in 1884 until today, black Americans have played an important role in Glencoe. The exhibit illustrates the history of the church and the role blacks have played in Glencoe’s governance.
The Historical Society Eklund Center museum with its Sports of All Sorts and Black History Month exhibits are open to the public the second and fourth Sundays of the months from March through June (except Mother’s Day) or by appointment. Call 847.835.0040.
