Glencoe’s Sportin’ Life New Exhibit, Sports of All Sorts, Opens at Historical Society Feb. 8

GLENCOE—Summer, fall, winter, spring—if the images of the seasons are better described for you as baseball, football, hockey and track, you’re a sport. And the Glencoe Historical Society’s newest exhibit, Sports of All Sorts, is for you.

Sports equipment has changed over the ages. How many people remember wooden skis or four-wheel roller skates? Enjoy a look at some of the older pieces of equipment from the historical society’s collection that made sports enjoyable in Glencoe—including 1930s leather’s catcher’s mitt, wooden tennis racquets and bathing suits before the bikini.

Curators Janice Gemp and Alice Glicksberg have assembled a complete look at the older equipment as well as a portfolio of pictures of people playing sports in Glencoe through every season. Remember the ice rink on Beach Street or the sledding hill on Whitebridge Hill? How about the slide at the beach or the men’s baseball league? All the pictures will be on display. An alcove is set aside specifically for Glencoe Park District (and Park-Recreation District when it had that title) tee-shirts and hats, a colorful compendium of programs in sports offered for youths through the years.

The exhibit opens to the public Feb. 8, 2–4 p.m. and will be open the second and fourth Sundays of the months from February through April.

A members’ preview is set for Feb. 6, 7:30–9 p.m. If you are a member, admission is free; otherwise a donation or membership fee is requested. Refreshments will be served Feb. 6.

Join us for a look back at the sports of all sorts that found their home in Glencoe. For more information, 837.835.0040.
