GLENCOE—People of all ages, not just little girls, have always been interested in dollhouses. The Thorne Rooms at the Art Institute of Chicago have fascinated viewers for more than 50 years with their visions of times that came before. Miniature rooms show us how people lived in different times and, in turn, how their lives were different from ours.
The Glencoe Historical Society is holding a grand opening for its newest exhibit—Miniature Rooms from Victorian Times, with rooms created by Mabel Mason. Ms. Mason was the mother of longtime Glencoe resident Ellen Bryant. Her tiny creations include a wedding shop and a hardware store, not unlike the not-yet-forgotten Wienecke’s.
The rooms were assembled with miniature furniture, but also many items Ms. Mason handmade out of scraps and leftovers. She took the basics and created beautiful illustrations of times past. Many of the rooms are lit with electricity as well.
The Society will be open from 2-4 p.m., Sunday (March 3). In honor of the opening of this new exhibit, refreshments will be served.
As always, residents interested in using the Society’s archives, helping the Society identify photos or donating photos to the collection, which will be used for our photo book project, are welcome to drop in as well.
