Glencoe Historical Society seeks Eklund Garden help (Dec 4, 2003)

GLENCOE—It’s the final month to see the Glencoe Historical Society’s Crowing Glory hat exhibition, with openings on the second and fourth Sundays of the month, Jan. 11th and 22nd, 2004, 2-4 p.m.

This head-turning look at the changing fashion of women’s and men’s toppers from the 19th through the 20th centuries, with artifacts ranging from bonnets of the late 1880s to picture hats and berets of the 1980s will be open only two more afternoons before it comes down. Crowing Glory will be replaced with Sports of All Sorts, a look back at sports equipment and traditions of past eras.

Crowing Glory Curators Janice Gemp and Alice Glicksberg have created a wonderland of hats, hatboxes and information for the exhibit based on artifacts from the Historical Society’s collection. Ranging from pillboxes to snoods, derbies to top hats, the exhibit will remain open through the end of the month. Call 847.835.0040 for special appointments or information.

Visitors to the Eklund Center, 377 Park Ave., also can view the permanent exhibits in the museum: Early Glencoe, with the LaPier Inn sign from the stagecoach stop of Anson Taylor; an 1840s Kentucky percussion rifle, of the type used by the pioneers of the western frontier; an ox harness; Downtown Glencoe, with artifacts and pictures of Glencoe's business district from first development in the 1880s through the 1920s; and the Eklund Furniture Design workshop.

Call the Historical Society for information, 847.835.0040.
