Historical Society Sets Annual Dinner on November 18 (Oct 31, 2002)

GLENCOE—Looking for that great stocking stuffer? Hostess gift? Hanukkah helper?

The Glencoe Historical Society is once again offering its Images of America: Glencoe, Illinois book, a picture history of the village from its beginnings to the 1970s. Written by Historical Society board members Ellen Kettler Paseltiner and Ellen Shubart, Glencoe, Illinois offers pictures from the village’s past in chapters featuring photos from the downtown business district – remember the Glencoe Theater? —the schools, churches, park district and recreational activities and architecture.

The book, at $19.95, makes a great gift for adults and children alike. The downtown district chapter, alone, offers a wonderful walking tour to find buildings that are still standing—Wienecke’s Plaza, for example—and what stores were there before, such as Schweiger’s Restaurant, the two blacksmith shops or Bartoli’s, with its famous soda fountain.

The book is being sold at the Historical Society, which will be open Sunday, Dec. 14, from 2–4 p.m., Village Hall or Books on Vernon. Orders also are being taken on the society?s phone, 837.835.0040; we will deliver anywhere in Glencoe.

Don’t miss this great opportunity to give those who live in the village now, those who have moved and all those who have memories a gift of history. Glencoe, Illinois is the best gift for anyone who cares about the village—and loves to learn about its history.
